Minimalism
Have you ever wondered why you have a million things in your closet and still can’t find anything to wear? Are you tired of clutter? Are you feeling overwhelmed and anxious in your space?
Let’s talk about minimalism and how it improved my quality of life.
What is Minimalism?
Minimalism is a movement near and dear to my heart. It is a design and lifestyle concept centered on simplicity and functionality, emphasizing that removing needless clutter and items will foster a more peaceful and mindful environment.
Did you know that studies find that clutter can adversely affect mental health, including stress, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, depression, poor sleep quality, and reduced productivity?
In 2018 I hit rock bottom in life. After a traumatic college experience, I faced post-graduation blues, difficulty finding a job, sudden relationship changes, and clutter accumulated from college.
At the time, I didn’t realize that having unnecessary items affected my mental health. I couldn't understand why I no longer felt peace in my personal space and why I always needed to shop to make myself feel better.
By God's grace, I discovered The Minimalists and Marie Kondo. They opened my eyes to a world in which I was no longer bound to overconsumption but to a world in which I was financially and emotionally free. By cleaning out my closet and home through the spark joy method- a system based on keeping only the things that bring you joy and letting go of the rest- I got rid of nearly 80% of my closet and 50% of my furniture/miscellaneous items.
As the months progressed, I felt lighter and freer. Today, I have rewired my brain to purchase things I need, not because they are on sale or because I feel down. Today I am intentional about my shopping habits. With all the money I save from overconsumption, I focus on saving money and purchasing more luxurious items/experiences that I was limited to before.
Minimalism and Fashion
Regarding fashion, minimalism involves creating a wardrobe focused on essential pieces with clean lines, simple silhouettes, and neutral colors. As a result, it allows you to get dressed easier and have a more classic wardrobe that lasts a lifetime.
To incorporate minimalism into your fashion, consider the following tips:
Declutter: Start by decluttering your clothes and getting rid of items that no longer serve a purpose to you. Keep only the things that you genuinely love and wear often.
Stick to a neutral color palette: Choose pieces in neutral colors such as black, white, gray, beige, or navy. These colors are timeless and can be easily mixed and matched.
Invest in quality pieces: Instead of buying cheap clothing, invest in high-quality, timeless pieces that will last a lifetime. This will not only save you money in the long run, but it will also reduce waste.
Choose simple and classic silhouettes: Look for clothing with simple lines and classic silhouettes. Avoid pieces with too many details, embellishments, or patterns. Of course, have a few statement items, but the rest should be more classic.
Keep accessories simple: Choose simple accessories that complement your outfit without overpowering them.
Practice mindful consumption: Before making a purchase, ask yourself if you really need the item and if it fits your overall style and wardrobe. Don’t buy things just because they are trendy or on sale.
By incorporating these tips, you can create a minimalist wardrobe that is both stylish and sustainable.
Prayer:
Father God, forgive me for overconsuming and relying on items to replace my need for you. Father, today I am struggling with (insert what it is for you). Reveal to me the areas where you want me to grow and what you want me to release to you. Give revelation of the items that no longer serve a purpose in my life. Father, show me your will and give me the courage and strength to let go of things. As I begin this decluttering and minimalist journey, may I feel lighter and experience you like I never have before.
Amen.
